Прошедшее продолженное время - The Past Continuous Tense

Глагольная форма в прошедшем продолженном времени имеет модель I (he, she, it) was doing, we (you, they) were doing. Эта форма указывает на то, что действие было в процессе совер- шения в определённый момент в прошлом. Этот момент может быть представлен обстоятельством времени, другим действием в прошлом или предполагаться ситуацией:
That time yesterday my husband was working in the garden.
He was digging. Глагольная форма was working и was digging показывает, что определённое лицо находилось в процессе указанной деятельности; этот человек начал работать в саду до определённого момента и не закончил работу в этот момент. В этом смысле такое действие считается незавершённым (незаконченным). Момент в прошлом в этом случае может быть выражен другим действием в прошлом в структуре придаточного предложения:

(I was in the middle of doing this.) В отличие от прошедшего продолженного прошедшее простое обозначает законченное действие — его начали и завершили.
