1. Unlike say, tell (as a reporting verb) is used with an
indirect object.
2. Tell must be fol lowed by a grammatical object and is usually used with indirect (reported) speech: 'The man told John (that) he was going to London.' 3. tell something to someone: 'Please tell the news to M rs Pate!.' BUT tell someone something WITHOUT to: 'They've told Mrs Pate! the news.' 4. When the object of the sentence is a wh· clause, the subject and verb in the wh· clause do NOT change places. 5. tell someone (not) to do something 6. tell someone about something BUT talk about something |
