Late one evening, as I was getting Into the bath, I suddenly heard a strange noise.

1. When there is no auxiliary verb, suddenly is placed immediately before the main verb: 'He suddenly stopped talking.' If the mai n verb is be, suddenly is placed immediately after it· 'He was suddenly all alone.' Otherwise suddenly goes immediately after the (first) auxiliary verb: 'He has suddenly stopped smoking.' Note also the use of suddenly at the beginning of a sentence, where it tends to have a more dramatic effect: 'Suddenly, there was a loud crash.' 'Suddenly, two strange men appeared in the room.'
