1. The noun following one of has a plural form: 'one of
my friends', 'one of her sisters', 'one of my brother's
teachers' .
2. When talking about possession, use •'sl·s', NOT the one of. 3. One/ones should not follow words which can themselves be used as pronouns (except in informal conversation). 4. A phrase beginning with one of takes a singular verb. 5. Do not use one instead of a or an unless it is used for emphasis. Compare: 'Would you like a cigarette?' 'I said you could take one cigarette, not two!' 6. Use one's as the possessive form of one. Note, however, that there is no apostrophe in Its (the possessive form of lt). 7. In British English (unlike American Engl ish) it is not usually acceptable to change from one to he, him, etc. However, most speakers find the repetition of one awkward, and try to avoid it: 'One cannot succeed without working hard.' |
